Derek McLoughlin imageDr McLoughlin (BSc, PhD, MCIEEM) has worked as an ecologist since graduating in 2003. He has worked in a number of capacities on a wide range of bird species including various wader species, Red-throated Diver, Gulls, Golden Plover, and Twite, on which he has completed a PhD. He has published several international peer-reviewed papers on the subject of ornithology. As a British Trust for Ornithology bird ringing license holder since 2005 and keen birdwatcher for the past 15 years he has developed a thorough knowledge of the ecology of Irish avifauna, with particular expertise in habitat selection studies and movement dynamics.а

Dr McLoughlin has successfully completed several ornithological and botany contracts for the National Parks and Wildlife Service on a range of species, and has built up an excellent rapport with many of its regional and research staff. In terms of Environmental Impact Assessment experience, Dr McLoughlin has contributed to the ornithological element of over 20 wind farm EIAs in the west and northwest of Ireland, along with EIAs for developments such as pump-storage hydro-electric power schemes, a proposed Wave-energy test site off the Mullet Peninsula and various overhead power-line schemes.а

He has previously completed contracts for such bodies as SSE Renewables (formerly Airtricity), ESBI, North-Western Regional Fisheries Board and The Marine Institute on various ornithological and freshwater ecology projects.

Dr McLoughlin also has a good level of habitat classification & botanical experience. He has previously worked for two field seasons on the NPWS Survey of Uplands Habitats and the NPWS national Semi-natural Grassland Survey.

He has a high level of proficiency in biological statistical methods and has recently completed a Higher Certificate in Data Handling and Analysis (FETAC L9). He holds full membership of the professional body ‘Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)’ adhering to their code of best practice.
